Independent trial environments provide growers with an additional level of confidence

Breedx welcomes global greenhouse visitors to Delphy seedless pepper trials

“Independent trial environments provide growers with an additional level of confidence”

Breedx is evaluating a portfolio of sweet and seedless snack peppers in different shapes and sizes under high-tech greenhouse conditions in Dutch research center Delphy. Yotam Guetta, Business Development Manager North Europe at Breedx, invites growers and other relevant parties over, as the visits are designed to give growers a practical understanding of plant performance beyond what can be seen at industry exhibitions.

An experienced grower or technical expert can understand a variety’s true potential by seeing the entire plant,” Yotam explains. “When you can observe the plant itself (its leaves, flowering, and fruit shape) you gain far more insight into the strength and characteristics of the variety than by only looking at harvested fruit displayed at a fair.

Strong international interest from North America
Breedx reports particularly strong interest from growers and greenhouse operators travelling from the United States and Canada, many of whom are combining their Dutch visits with Greentech taking place in Amsterdam during the same week.

According to him, many North American growers are interested in comparing greenhouse systems, crop architecture and production strategies used in the Netherlands with their own operations back home. “Many growers want to see as much as possible while they are here.”

Technical evaluation and data collection
The Delphy trials are also generating structured performance data that Breedx plans to use as part of its commercial and breeding evaluation process. Yotam emphasises that the independent trial environment provides growers with an additional level of confidence when evaluating new genetics.

“The Delphy Improvement Centre is a well-established research institute and a benchmark for high-tech greenhouse facilities. They are collecting all the data for us, and by the end of the season, we will have organised data for each variety, which will serve as a valuable reference point for growers.”

The company expects the information gathered from the trials to support more targeted variety recommendations based on grower requirements, including production potential, fruit characteristics and market preferences.

Grower feedback continues to shape breeding decisions
Yotam says that direct interaction with growers remains an important part of Breedx’s breeding strategy. Feedback collected during greenhouse visits and customer meetings continues to influence which varieties move forward in development.

“We always need to have one ear to the market and one ear to the growers,” he said.

He pointed to previous customer evaluations where flavour ultimately became the deciding factor for advancing a variety within the breeding programme. “It was not the highest yielder, but customers repeatedly mentioned the exceptional taste. Because of that trait, we decided to continue promoting it.”

This year’s Delphy showcase will focus exclusively on sweet and seedless snack peppers, while tomatoes may potentially be included in future greenhouse demonstrations.

As international greenhouse professionals prepare for June industry visits in the Netherlands, Breedx invites growers, technical managers, and commercial partners to visit its seedless pepper trials at the Delphy research facilities between 8 and 10 June, with additional visits possible before and after those dates.

While the visit schedule is already filling up, Breedx confirmed that 10 June remains relatively open for appointments, with flexibility for additional visits in the weeks following the main event period.
